Why the Safe Zone Matters

YouTube renders the video duration (e.g. "12:34") as a small dark badge fixed to the bottom-right corner of every thumbnail, on every placement, on every device. If your text, logo, or a face is positioned there, it gets covered — permanently, with no way to opt out.

On Shorts and mobile feeds, additional UI elements (channel avatar, like button, progress bar) can overlap other edges too.

Practical Safe Zone Rules

  • Never place text in the bottom-right 15% of the frame — the duration badge will cover it.
  • Keep faces and key subjects within the center 70% of the canvas.
  • Leave a margin from all four edges — some TV and mobile displays crop the outer 5–10%.
  • Test at actual size: view your design at 168×94px before publishing to catch any overlap issues.

Visual Safe Zone Template

Designers commonly overlay a guide grid: draw a rectangle from 10% inset on all sides, with an additional exclusion zone in the bottom-right corner sized roughly 160×40px (scaled to your canvas). Anything inside this region is guaranteed visible; anything outside risks being cropped or covered.

Common Safe Zone Mistakes

  • Placing a logo watermark in the bottom-right (gets hidden by duration badge)
  • Putting critical text flush against any edge (risks mobile cropping)
  • Centering a face exactly in the middle without accounting for text space
