Are Shorts Thumbnails Different from Regular Thumbnails?

Yes and no. YouTube Shorts thumbnails are stored using the same image server infrastructure as regular YouTube videos, which means the same URL pattern applies. However, there are key differences:

  • Aspect ratio: Shorts are filmed vertically (9:16), but the thumbnail stored on YouTube's servers is still in 16:9 landscape format.
  • Vertical display: In the Shorts feed, YouTube shows a full-screen vertical version of the video — not the 16:9 thumbnail.
  • Limited resolution: Some Shorts may not have the full HD thumbnail, since many are uploaded from mobile devices.

How to Download a YouTube Shorts Thumbnail
